Lancaster County, PA Homeless Union Chapter:
The Lancaster County Homeless Union chapter is one of several chapters across Pennsylvania and the United States that make up the National Union of the Homeless. The Lancaster County chapter is coordinating a medical equipment program. Organizing around the cuts to Medicaid & SNAP and the criminalization of homelessness and poverty as we build a poverty abolitionist movement.
What We Do:
- Outreach at food banks, churches, community events, etc. “People’s Benefit Clinics”
- Create our own media: writing, sharing stories and videos
- Host community events, protest, and meetings
- Share information, experiences and resources
- Attend and speak at local government meetings
- Organizing against the criminalization of homelessness and poverty
- “Revolutionary Lawyering”
Resources We Offer:
- Assistance with state benefit sign ups, renewals, appeals and work requirement exemptions. (Medicaid, SNAP, etc)
- Assistance and advocacy around health insurance denials or unexpected bills
- Medical equipment
- Walkers, wheelchairs, shower chairs and benches, crutches, knee rovers, etc.
- “Revolutionary Lawyering” court support and advocacy for our members
- Including eviction court, probation hearings, and any other moral support needed
Resources We Don’t Have:
- We do NOT have funding to help with rent, security deposit, etc
- We are NOT landlords and don’t personally have available rooms or houses
- We do NOT operate a shelter and don’t have a place for people to stay
